YOUR SLACK STATUS, LIVE

♪ Mirror Talk — Nic D
— what your teammates will see
PRIVACY TuneStatus runs on your machine and nowhere else. You create your own Slack and Spotify connections (scoped to your status and your currently playing track — nothing more), and they're saved to a file in your home folder. We never see your keys. We couldn't — this website is just a download page.

Install

~10 min · one-time · macOS, Windows, Linux
STEP 01

Get Node.js

The free runtime TuneStatus runs on. If you're not sure whether you have it, you probably don't.

  1. Download it from nodejs.org (the LTS version) and run the installer, or
  2. Mac with Homebrew: brew install node
STEP 02

Run one command

This is the only time you'll ever see a terminal — one paste, 15 seconds.

Mac (⌘-space, type "Terminal", Enter) or Linux:

curl -fsSL https://tunestatus.com/tunestatus.js -o ~/tunestatus.js && node ~/tunestatus.js

Windows (press ⊞ Win, type "cmd", Enter):

curl.exe -fsSL https://tunestatus.com/tunestatus.js -o %USERPROFILE%\tunestatus.js && node %USERPROFILE%\tunestatus.js

It downloads TuneStatus (one readable file) to your home folder and starts it.

STEP 03

Follow the wizard

Your browser opens TuneStatus's own setup page — running from your computer. It walks you through connecting Slack and Spotify, every click spelled out. Play a song; your status updates within 30 seconds.

Mac: click "Start automatically at login" on your dashboard and never think about TuneStatus again. Windows/Linux: add node ~/tunestatus.js to your startup apps.

FAQ

Is this safe? What can it see?

It can see the song you're playing and your own Slack status — nothing else. No messages, no files, nothing about anyone but you. You create the connections in your own accounts, and you can shut it all off yourself, anytime. The whole app is one file you can open and read.

Where do my keys go?

Into a file in your home folder on your computer — nowhere else. This website never sees them; it only hands you the app.

What if I set my own status, like "In a meeting"?

Your status wins. TuneStatus never overwrites something you set by hand — it waits, and your music comes back after you clear it.

What happens when I close my laptop?

Your status clears itself a few minutes later — statuses are set with a built-in expiration, so walking away politely tidies up after you. When you're back and playing music again, your status picks it up within 30 seconds. Nothing to restart, nothing to click.

Can I hide my music sometimes?

Yep — the dashboard (bookmark 127.0.0.1:8898) has a pause switch and an optional "only during work hours" schedule. Podcasts are always ignored.

What does it cost?

Nothing. If it made you smile, there's a Dr Pepper button below. 🥤
